Covenant faith: New covenant of salvation

The covenant of Jesus Christ truly is the covenant that restores hope to our faith: Without hope man seems to be led by a faith that still leaves him uncertain about his salvation, leaving man to wonder about questions such as ‘what is salvation’ and ‘how salvation is obtainable’. Certainly valid questions if you are unsure about your salvation. Questions that are worth the time to be answered!

In answering that we need to understand that the ways of the Lord have always been faith in covenant; therein is our salvation sealed. Many people ask “what is the meaning of covenant” or “define covenant” and the answer always remains the same: A covenant with God is an agreement with God. “Can two walk together except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3). This means that when we say that we are in covenant with God, we are saying that we are walking in agreement with the commandments that He has set for our faith; that we are in agreement with the tools and articles that He has given for the purpose of faith.

The ways of the Lord is faith in covenant

“That you should enter into covenant with the Lord your God, and into His Oath, which the Lord your God makes with you this day” (Deuteronomy 29:11).

We cannot know God apart from His covenant and therefore salvation cannot be sealed or secured apart from knowing the expectation that God has from man. Yes, that’s right; God has an expectation of man! Contrary to popular belief which dictates that salvation is void of any responsibility, God does have an expectation of man to work out his salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12) and this is done according to the terms and conditions of His covenant. It is by the promise of covenant that our souls are bestowed into the care of our Lord and we experience His peace, joy, love and fullness.

We read in Hebrews 8:6 “But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.” The better covenant that is referred to here is the new covenant of Jesus Christ or as it is also known, the second covenant of Jesus Christ. It is this covenant which seals our salvation through our obedience to uphold His commandments.

Taking the above into consideration we see a few things emerge here: We see that in order for our salvation to be sealed we need to be joined to God in His second covenant, we need to know what that agreement entails and we need to be actively busy walking in that agreement for it to be of effect (for our salvation to be sealed).  You don’t sign a contract for a house and then walk away from the responsibility, do you? Of course not. If that holds true for the earthly things, how much more to the spiritual things that carry eternal value? The point I am trying to make here is that although salvation is free, it is certainly not free of responsibility.

It is only when faith is in covenant that we can eternally be joined to God.

If we take the example of the house and the responsibility of keeping to that contract and bring that into the context of what we are talking about it, then it would look a little something like this: The house would be symbolic of our eternal abode in the bosom of the Father, that’s the promise. Just like we have to make down payments every month until that house is truly ours such is faith the down payment to that promise, our eternal abode. We have to uphold our agreement on that contract that we signed in faith, by daily carrying the yoke and burden of Jesus Christ (Matthew 11:30), in order for us to be able to one day have the promise in full. Much like we honor the commitment we make on paper by signing a contract and fulfilling those duties, we honor the vow to uphold the ways of the Lord by daily walking in agreement with Him, which is the way of His covenant. Our agreement is to serve Him in righteousness by the standard of Jesus Christ with the tokens He has sanctified for our faith.

By receiving the truth of the knowledge of Jesus Christ we can now correctly define the expectations of the Lord according to His ways, enabling us to daily make that down payment of faith so we too may be partakers of the eternal inheritance that is promised unto all who uphold His commandments.

Hebrews 9:15: “And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
