The Tradition of The Spirit vs. The Tradition of The Flesh

Tradition of faith

In Colossians 2:21 Apostle Paul describes to us the contact points of the second covenant (the tradition of the Spirit) by saying, "Touch not, taste not, handle not."

"Touch not, taste not, and handle not" are the words he used to describe the invisible contact points of the second covenant, thus bringing to our attention that, in order to worship God in Spirit and in truth, no longer could believers use the earthbound tokens of the 1st covenant that represented the origin of our first birth, being that of the soil, after the likeness of the flesh.

We Cannot Touch God with the Tradition of the Flesh

We cannot touch God with the traditions of the flesh; we cannot taste the sweetness of His mercy by pursuing our own aspirations; we cannot uphold the integrity of the Spirit by being true to the standard of our own principle.

In John 14:6 Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." This does not mean that whoever says His name is saved. This means that our faith has to express Christ and nothing of ourselves.

When Jesus said, “I am the way”. He was saying that it is by this new tradition of The Spirit that we walk in the way of righteousness. Jesus said, “I am the truth”, meaning, “That by My knowledge you are saved”. Even as our Lord brought out in Hosea 4:6, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me."

And again in 1Samuel 2:3, "Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed."

"Charity is the testimony of living faith"

Christ is the mediator of our salvation according to the terms of the 2nd covenant and God weighs our faith according to the righteousness of Christ upon the scale of grace and truth.

How Are We To Overcome?

By Jesus saying, “I am the life”,  he was making known that  by His sacrifice death would be overcome. Within the sacrifices of the first covenant the presence of death was made evident. The tradition of the flesh carried the weight of sin and death, and this weighed down the conscience with feelings of guilt and shame. People served God from the position of guilt and that is why they had to keep the tradition of continual repentance.

(Hebrews 9:14)  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

The tradition of the Spirit rejoices in the testimony of Christ as it testifies of the pure conscience and the fruit of our lips gives evidence  to our souls being made living by the substance of Christ.

(Heb 13:15)  By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

Can We Build God's Kingdom Through Prayer?

The altar of Christ is an altar of praise and worship and not an altar of repentance, for our salvation remains sealed as we remain diligent in keeping the tradition of the spirit.  As we build the kingdom of God through prayer (touch not) preaching (taste not) and prophecy (handle not), we Grow in the Grace of God, increasing in the fruits of the spirit and nurturing them unto virtue.

When our accountability is according to the Law of Grace and truth, then we are no longer held accountable for our fallen nature, but are rewarded for our choices of faith which forsakes the tradition of the flesh to nurture within us the divine nature of Christ.

The purpose of the second covenant is to perfect the soul in the likeness of Christ, to restore what was lost through Adam's transgression.
